Nine Physicians Associated with Sarah Cannon Research Institute Named to Best Doctors List

May 03, 2011

NASHVILLE, TN., May 3, 2011 -- Nine Tennessee physicians affiliated with the Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI) were chosen by fellow physicians as Best Doctors in America for 2011-2012.

Compiled by Boston-based Best Doctors, Inc., the Best Doctors in America database is the result of the largest, continuous, peer-to-peer survey of the medical profession. Only those doctors recognized to be in the top three-five percent of their specialty earn the Best Doctors in America honor.

“We know the physicians we work with are among the best in the country, and it’s pleasing that their colleagues hold them in the same high regard,” said Dee Anna Smith, SCRI’s CEO.

Two of SCRI’s principal investigators in Nashville and four partners at Tennessee Oncology, a SCRI strategic site, were honored in the medical oncology/hematology category. They include:

  • Howard A. Burris III, M.D., chief medical officer and director, drug development, SCRI
  • David Spigel, M.D., director of lung cancer research, SCRI
  • F. Anthony Greco, M.D., director of Sarah Cannon Cancer Center
  • Anthony A. Meluch, M.D., medical oncology, Tennessee Oncology
  • Lester Lee Porter III, M.D., medical oncology, Tennessee Oncology
  • Eric L. Raefsky, M.D., medical oncology, Tennessee Oncology

Three physicians from SCRI’s non-oncology strategic sites were also named Best Doctors:

  • Edward L. Cattau, M.D., gastroenterology, Memphis Gastroenterology Group
  • Myron Lewis, M.D., gastroenterology, Memphis Gastroenterology Group
  • W. Keith Williams, M.D., obstetrics and gynecology, The Jackson Clinic

More than 50,000 physicians in the United States participated in the anonymous and confidential polling process. Doctors do not pay to be included in the database, nor are they paid to participate in the survey.
